Between lawn work and painting our rental house in preparation for our shipment, we took a short trip to Assateague Island / Ocean City. We stayed here. On the Maryland side, the horses number around 150 and roam freely with park rangers controlling births using non-hormonal birth control delivered through a dart. On the Virginia side, the horses are owned by the volunteer fire department and kept in contained areas. There is no birth control but an annual swim followed by an auction of the horses each July keeps the Virginia side horse population to around 150. The short stature is based on the poor quality of the food, and the bloated appearance is due to to high dietary salt intake.
